Offseason Wrestling Training in Milford, CT

Wrestling season in Connecticut is short. What you do between March and November decides what happens on the mat next winter.

The problem with the offseason

Most wrestlers lift, run, and hit a few camps. That keeps you in shape. It does not keep you sharp. Mat sense — the feel for pressure, angles, and scrambles — fades fast when you are not grappling live.

Why jiu jitsu works for wrestlers

You already own the hardest part. Wrestlers walk into jiu jitsu with takedowns, top pressure, and a motor most people never build. What jiu jitsu adds:

  • Bottom position that is not a nightmare. Wrestlers hate their back. Jiu jitsu teaches you to fight from underneath instead of panicking there.
  • Scrambling with more options. More positions means more ways out of a bad one.
  • Live rounds without a weight cut. You grapple hard, year-round, without grinding your body down the way a season does.
  • Grip and control work that shows up directly in hand fighting.

What judo adds

Judo throws come from a different angle than wrestling shots. Learning to finish from grips rather than from a shot gives you a second toolbox on your feet — useful when a match gets scrambly and the level change is not there.

This is not a replacement for wrestling

Be clear about this. Jiu jitsu rules are not wrestling rules. Points differ, stalling differs, and some jiu jitsu habits will cost you in a folkstyle match. Train it as a supplement and keep wrestling in the winter. Anyone telling you jiu jitsu will make you a better wrestler by itself is wrong.

Who this is for

High school wrestlers from Foran, Jonathan Law, and Platt Tech. Middle schoolers coming up. Guys who wrestled years ago and want to compete at something again.
